In 1992 papaya ringspot virus turned up in Puna, the district on Hawaii's Big Island where most of the state's papaya grew.

Aphids carried it from tree to tree, and infected trees yellowed, stunted, and bore fruit marked with rings.

No spray cures a virus inside a tree, so growers could only cut out the sick trees and watch the disease outrun them.
