About the book

A twenty-four week correspondence course in concentration, posted one lesson at a time so that students could not race ahead. Haanel drills a single skill — holding one image steadily — and builds everything else on top of it.

Most of us live almost entirely in what Haanel calls the world without: the bank balance, the boss’s mood, the weather, the news. When something goes wrong out there, out there is where we go looking for the fix.

Haanel opens his course by pointing the other way. There is also a world within, a world of thought and feeling and power, and although nobody can see it, he insists its forces are mighty.

His claim about how the two relate is blunt. The outer world is not a separate kingdom that happens to push your moods around. It is the visible side of the inner one: what appears without was found within. Few people ever notice this, he says, and yet it is the world within that makes the world without.

  2. Once he has the two worlds, Haanel gives them a direction. They do not push on each other equally, like two people leaning on a door from opposite sides. One is the source and the other is the result.

“The world within is the cause, the world without the effect; to change the effect you must change the cause.”

That sentence is the hinge of the whole first lesson. It means your circumstances are never where the real work gets done, however loudly they demand attention. They are the readout. The inner world moves first, and the outer one follows it — not the other way around, and not both at once.

  3. How does Haanel describe the relationship between the world within and the world without?

    • They are unrelated, and wisdom means ignoring the outer one
    • They shape each other equally, so you can start from either side
    • The outer world is the cause, and the inner world adapts to it
    • The inner world is the cause, and the outer world is its effectCorrect answer

Haanel gives the two worlds a single direction: within is cause, without is effect. The tempting “both ways” answer misses his point — if you could start from either side, changing your circumstances would be enough, and he argues it never is.

  4. Picture someone who hates her job. She finds a new one, better paid, in a nicer office. For two months things are good. Then the same knot in the stomach comes back, attached to a new manager and a new set of deadlines.

Haanel saw this pattern clearly. Most people, he writes, try to change effects by working with effects, and all they manage is to trade one form of distress for another.

That is the trap: working on effects with effects. The new job was a real change, but a change on the outer side only. The cause travelled with her in the moving box, and it quietly set up the old conditions again in the new room.

  5. None of this means Haanel wants you to sit back and let the outer world fall apart. He is not preaching withdrawal. He calls the world within the practical world, the place where people of power generate courage, hope, enthusiasm and confidence.

What comes out of that inner work is not a pleasant mood. It is the practical skill to see a vision and then make it real. Action still happens, and it happens out there, with hands and phone calls and decisions.

The difference is where the action starts. Outer effort that begins from a changed inner world carries its new cause with it. Outer effort that begins from the old one just rearranges the furniture.

  6. A man has moved cities three times in five years. Each time, within a year, the same restless dissatisfaction he left behind catches up with him. What would Haanel say is going on?

    • He is not holding enough cheerful thoughts about each new city
    • He is changing effects with effects, and the cause came alongCorrect answer
    • He has not yet found a place whose conditions truly suit him
    • He should stop acting in the outer world until his mind is fixed

Moving works on the outer side only, so the cause — which Haanel places in the world within — arrives at every new address. The “cheerful thoughts” answer is the common misreading: Haanel asks for a change of cause, not a coat of optimism, and he never tells anyone to stop acting.
